The Curious Case of Hermes’ Birkin!

I can be a little bit nosy sometimes (read most of the times…). 
So I was really curious about the Birkin bag waiting list story. That’s why I decided to go for a little investigation. I have interviewed 2 different Hermes stores in 2 different cities and these are the answers I got.
Store n. 1: no possibility of a waiting list, since Hermes decided to cut off most of its production due to the fact that the Birkin has been overexposed. 
Specifically, according to this version, the Birkin bag has been spotted on too many so-called celebs and this is not acceptable for the super classy Maison. As if we believe that Victoria Beckham payed for even one of her bags….
Store n. 2: waiting list possible on September or April. Call on March to know the color palette.
Waiting time: 20 days to 6 months depending upon colors and materials selected. 
In case you don’t want to wait just drop by the end of December and we see what we can get you… Seriously?????????????????
So Monsieur Hermes which of the 2 versions is the right one? I am speachless in both cases….

Posso essere un po’ impicciona a volte (leggi il più delle volte …).
Ero davvero curiosa di sapere la storia della famigerata lista d’attesa per la Birkin. 
Ecco perché ho deciso di fare una piccola indagine. 
Ho intervistato 2 differenti negozi di Hermes in 2 città diverse e queste sono le risposte che ho ricevuto.
Negozio n. 1: nessuna lista d’attesa disponibile perchè Hermes ha deciso di tagliare la maggior parte della sua produzione a causa del fatto che la Birkin è stata sovraesposta.
In particolare, secondo questa versione, la borsa Birkin è stata avvistata su troppe cosiddette star e questo non è accettabile per la super selettiva Maison .
Come se noi credessimo che Victoria Beckham ha pagato di sua tasca  una sola delle mille borse che ha….
Negozio n. 2: liste d’attesa possibili a settembre o aprile. Chiamare a marzo per conoscere i colori previsti.
Tempo di attesa: da 20 giorni a 6 mesi a seconda dei colori e dei materiali selezionati.
Nel caso in cui non si volesse proprio aspettare…….. passare alla fine di dicembre e vediamo cosa le possiamo rimediare….. Ma scherziamo ?????????????????
Così Monsieur Hermes quale delle 2 versioni è quella giusta? Io sono senza parole in entrambi i casi ….

  1. Certo, la Beckham ha pagato di tasca sua tutte le cento e passa Birkin che ha! Come no! E poi c'era la marmpotta che faceva la cioccolata. No comment. Ma quanto ho riso quando hai raccontato queste avventure a cena, ih ih ih…

    …una mia amica che è perennemente a dieta dice che una donna non è mai troppo magra !!!!

    Qui a Udine che nonostante sia una città di Provincia c'è un bellissimo negozio di Hermes ( i clienti sono anche provenienti dall'Austria e Slovenia)…spediscono ovunque e mi pare non ci siano lunghe liste di attesa

  10. I think it base on each city. In Hong Kong, waiting list is cut off. My sister-in-law placed the order in Paris last year and got her Birkin after 2 months.(of course you should buy something in their shop first, then told them you would like to buy a Birkin too:)

  21. Senti, io qua ne vedo a decine ogni volta che vado in centro, e sono tutte uguali: blu, beige, nero o, al massimo, grigio. Tutte rigorosamente aperte e sbracatissime.
    L'unica veramente bella l'ho avvistata 6 mesi fa all'Opera: pitone, cucito a ricomporre. Mi chiedo per quella lì quanto ci sia voluto (€ e tempo..).
    Ribadisco: è sopravvalutata e decisamente inflazionata. A meno che non si scelgano materiali come il pitone o il coccodrillo. Senti se il Rivale Di Testino può regalartene una per Natale!

I would find either one very annoying – they either sell it or they dont – if they do they should have it in stock or an accurate fair waiting list – to be honest they are overexposed and i would not pay that much for a bag anyway that is copied to death – a Kelly though ….. having said all of that is it not this little tale of woe that ended up in the exceedingly nice Dior booties?? xxx

  31. anche io sono sempre curiosa del perché e per come e non mi sorprende ci siano sue versioni così differenti… però non sono una grande sostenitrice dell'acquisto di certi status symbol… poi se si tratta di collezione per carità, ma li concepisco solo come regali (aspetta che trovo un Beckham…hahah!) comunque blog molto carino, le foto mi piacciono molto.

Non so come possa essere possibile, dati i prezzi elevatissimi, ma è così! Boh! Ma ci starai mica facendo un pensierino? pazzaaaa! 😀 Poi davvero dovrò sequestrarti tutto il guardaroba stupendo!

  54. Mia mamma e mia zia ce l'hanno tutte e due la Birkin, ma gliel'ha regalata mia nonna prima che io nascessi e non so come è avvenuto l'acquisto, ma non credo proprio che ci fossero tutte quste difficoltà se no gliel'avrei sentito dire di sicuro!
    Cmq personalmente vista tutta la fatica che bisogna fare per avere quella borsa punterei su altro… -_- (non è che la Birkin mi fa impazzire, si era capito vero? ^^)

  56. very interesting post!!! i heard that Europe stores has more Birkin in stock than anywhere else, not sure if it's right or not?!! anyways i bought mines right in the store on display:) Victoria had more birkin than anyone else in the world i guess, so jealous of her, haha!!

  66. I live 5 blocks from Hermes in Chicago and the last time I went they didn't have neither Kelly nor Birkin in stock. Which was shocking because in January when I was in there they had Kelly bags. I think I am going to save up and buy a Kelly for my 35th birthday, I've been wanting one for years. 🙂

  71. yes there's a waiting list. Here in HK we have quite some stock, becuz handbag is a market, especially a secondary handbag market is very huge here. Mainlanders from China come to buy Hermes Birkin. And many buyers go to Hermes or LV in Paris and buy at a lower price and sell in HK. It's a huge business here.

  76. HI Francesca! Interesting post indeed! Here in BKK, there are 2 Hermes stores and no stock of Birkin or Kelly. I wanted to have one and they said I can order and wait for 6 months. I didn't order because the price plus tax tax tax here is too much, better get one in Europe.
    Funny thing is women here when they have a branded bag (read Hermes or LV) they cover the handles with scarf or crotchet to protect them from usage. To me, its kind of silly. We all agree that it costs a fortune but if you buy it, use it! if not then just buy a woolen or fabric bag instead!

  77. Da quello che so io Hermès ha recentemente abolito la lista di attesa, quindi o se ne ordina una con gli ordini speciali (sono una-due volte all'anno. Ogni negozio ha un numero limitato di ordini e quindi è normale che accettino o ne informino solo i migliori clienti o quelli che vogliono comprare qualcosa di costoso) o si è fortunati e la si trova come capita in negozio (scena a cui ho assistito. Non vi dico le urla di gioia della fortunata collezionista, sì collezionista).
    Per quanto riguarda la Beckham non sono sicuro che hermès gliele regali. La borsa non ne avrebbe bisogno. Credo che sia una perversione di VB per sembrare elegantissima, anche se, modesto parere, per me lei è una tamarra.

  82. La Birkin è favolosa e decisamente fuori budget lol.
    Ho sempre sentito parlare delle liste di attesa, che generalmente sono piuttosto lunghe. Forse ti converebbe provare a contattare la maison tramite email… non so, magari hanno un servizio clienti o qualcosa del genere.
    La Beckham non mi piace – è una che ha fatto strada perché è nata in un famiglia ricca, che ha pagato per farla entrare nelle Spice (e forse togliersela anche un pò dalle scatole secondo me). Non ha un briciolo di talento e non capoisco come si possa definire una fashion icon – mi pare chiaro che con tutti i soldi che si ritrova possa permettersi ciù che vuole… grazie tante Victoria, così a fare la fashion icon son brava anc'io. -_-" Ok, il dente avvelenato contro la Beckham è stato definitivamente tolto.

  83. Are the bags even that serious? Seems ridiculous. And yea they definitely gift those things so more people will buy them to be like a celeb. My Hermes here in Houston was robbed and almost all of their birkins were stolen! hahah
