Bruxelles un anno dopo l’attentato. Io c’ero.
Brussels a year after the attack. I was inside the airport at the time of the bomb blast, along with my husband and my son!
Brussels … the destination for me and my husband for a “quiet” weekend with our baby.
It was all gone smoothly. In fact, just we arrived we immediately headed to admire the windows of the famous chocolate shops of Brussels, full of every kind of chocolate: milk, hazelnut, pistachio, almond, fruit.
We headed straight to La Grand Place, considered one of the most beautiful squares in the world and has every right in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Every visit to Brussels should start from here. All around the square there are houses that tell the history of the crafts; from the residence of the traders, the Etoile with the memorial to Everard ‘t Serclaes , the House of Brassers, the House of tailors and that of painters, where Victor Hugo lived in 1852. We then went to the Ilot Sacré (Sacred Island), the quadrilateral which is located right behind the Grand Place in the center of Brussels. A maze of quaint little streets, where tourists love to shop in the quaint shops and bakeries and then relax sitting many café tables or breweries.
It then came the time to leave and we headed to the airport. I, my husband and little Lorenzo started the rigmarole of checking luggage . Once we arrived at the security checks and just at that moment we heard a huge explosion, I looked up and the roof collapsed a few centimeters from my husband, then black smoke invaded the airport and all begin to run and scream. We tried to reach our gate when a speaker announced in English that we must all leave the airport. We did not understand why.
Only through the internet we found that unfortunately it was a terrorist attack.
In the afternoon the army came and took us inside a hangar where they had set up the beds for the night.
Luckily the next day, the staff of the airport took us to the main airport to take an early flight back to Rome.
Luckily our son Lorenzo has been our strength in times of distress. Thanks Lorenzo.
